What inspired you to set up B&M?

In 1979 I went to work for a well known established interior fit out company right up to 1993 and that’s where I got a real passion for the industry.

I started as a general site labourer and worked my way up and progressed to a senior foreman working with sub-contractors and working day-to-day on the operations management.

I was also responsible for organising risk statements and carrying out relevant paperwork.

It gave me a real taste of it and I was completing projects up to half a million pounds, which was a fantastic learning curve of course. It was there I learnt the skills that then gave me the inspiration to set up my own business, which is more than 22 years ago now.

What’s been your most memorable project?

We have been lucky to work on literally thousands of projects. We like to keep an update on all our contracts and we have now won and completed more than 5,500 jobs, so it’s not an easy question to answer! We have a fantastic relationship with the University of Nottingham and I would have to say working on the continental cafeterias certainly stands out. It was one of our first large tendered projects for the university.

What challenges has the business overcome since you set up?

It’s been hard work of course and looking back, it’s probably harder than I thought it was going to be. It was tough back in the early 90s to assert ourselves on the market, but through hard work from all of our staff we managed to overcome challenges and it’s fantastic to look back now.

What’s your secret to the ongoing success of B&M?

I like to think we are one of the most hard working and conscientious companies in Nottingham and that’s something we are renowned for when working on all of the projects. As a company and working with so many different clients you have to be upfront and honest with people and that helps when you’re building your client database in my view.

What’s been your highlight of 2015?

The last year has been hugely successful for B&M Installations, so it’s hard to pick just one. It’s fantastic to see we continue to expand and obviously winning prestigious tenders through a number of the city’s big clientele such as intu and the university. We have also purchased a new office space and that’s something we look forward to in 2016.
